The Bush Administration wants to strip Greater Yellowstone's wolves of federal protection, paving the way for the mass killing of wolves in the northern Rockies. The administration is accepting public comments on this disastrous proposal only until May 9. Please register your opposition right now by clicking here to submit an Official Citizen Comment. Removing wolves from the endangered species list would put them at the mercy of Wyoming and Idaho, which are already plotting to kill off half their wolves. The governor of Idaho himself has pledged to be one of the first to shoot a wolf! Wyoming is seeking federal approval for a plan that would classify wolves as "predators." Predator status would allow anyone to shoot a wolf anywhere at anytime, virtually ensuring that the wolf population dwindles to the absolute minimum number allowed by law. Rampant oil and gas development, logging and other threats are taking a mounting toll on the western wildlands that wolves depend on for survival. More than ever, wolves need tough federal safeguards against hunting and habitat loss. The wolf's remarkable comeback from the brink of extinction in Greater Yellowstone is one of America's greatest environmental success stories. Don't let the Bush Administration destroy that success! Send your Official Citizen Comment today and tell the Bush Administration not to abandon the wolf!
End the Slaughter of America's Horses
April 27, 2007
Permanent Ban on Horse Slaughter Advances in Congress
Yesterday afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly (277-137) to restore a 34-year-old ban on the commercial sale and slaughter of America's wild horses and burros. On Wednesday, the bill to ban the sale and transport to slaughter of all American horses cleared a critical Senate committee by a decisive 15-7 vote. These victories move us even closer to banning horse slaughter in the United States permanently.
Here's what happened: Your U.S. Representative, Ed Markey, voted yes on the wild horse bill. Please call Representative Markey at (202) 225-2836 and express your thanks. Your U.S. Senator, John Kerry, who serves on the Senate committee, voted yes on the horse slaughter bill. Please call Senator Kerry at (202) 224-2742 and let him know you appreciate his vote.
Your calls and emails are key to winning this fight. Everyday this past week, as I walked the halls of the House and Senate with other Humane Society of the United States staff, shoring up support for these two votes, every office we visited said the same thing: "We are getting a lot of phone calls from our constituents about the horses." Please help keep the momentum going:
Click here to urge support for restoring protections to wild horses and burros.
Click here to urge support for banning the slaughter of all horses.
To shut down the horse slaughter industry in the United States and to stop horses from being exported to other countries for slaughter -- where they face longer transports and an even more grisly death -- we need everyone who cares about horses to get involved. Please tell your friends, family and colleagues how they can help.
Thank you for your continued commitment to ending horse slaughter. Together, we have made tremendous progress. And together we will finish the job and shutter this barbaric business for good.

Keep Idaho's woods old growth and pristine!!! Stop illgegal logging!
The National Forests in Idaho is the largest pristine wild forest slower 48 states. It is the only place where nearly all of the wildlife species that characterize the Northern Rockies can still be found.
Tell the Forest Service to Keep Idaho's Wild Lands Pristine>>
The state of Idaho contains over 9.3 million acres roadless national forest lands - the most of any state outside of Alaska. And these roadless areas are of national and global significance. The variety of landscapes represented by these roadless lands is unmatched by any other state outside of Alaska.
The new rules the Forest Service wants will destroy these wild forests with commercial logging, mining, and road-building. This is the first time that the Idaho Roadless Plan has been presented to the American public for consideration and it's also the first time that comments have been requested at the national level for a rulemaking specific to Idaho's roadless areas.
But we only have until May 10th to express our outrage on their plans for opening these lands to exploitation.

Support the Kerry Feingold Global Warming Initiative
We need your help to make sure the Army Corps of Engineers gets its priorities straight with regards to global warming.
The Army Corps' faulty levees, bad planning, and refusal to heed the warnings of climate scientists led to over a thousand deaths and billions of dollars in damages in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
If we hope to minimize the impact of future natural disasters, the Corps MUST start paying attention to the realities of global warming when managing America's waterways.
This week, your Senator will be voting on two great amendments to the Water Resources Development Act that will reform the Corps and force it to consider global warming in prioritizing projects.
Contact your Senators today to ask them to make sure the Corps takes the threats posed by global warming into account.
Although natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina cannot be avoided, we can reduce their impacts by protecting wetlands, factoring in global warming and reforming the Army Corps of Engineers.
This week, the Senate has the opportunity to prevent damage like that caused by Hurricane Katrina by passing the "Kerry-Feingold Global Warming Amendment" and the "Feingold-McCain Prioritization Amendment" to S. 1248, the Water Resources and Development Act (WRDA).
These amendments will modernize the Army Corps of Engineers so that it will spend taxpayer dollars more responsibly and protect and enhance the environment.
Please don't delay - contact your Senators now about this week's upcoming vote!
Once you've sent your message, please forward this email on to your friends and family and ask them to join you in contacting their Senators.
Thank you again for your support.
Sincerely,

Stop Genetically Engineered Tree Plantations!!!!
Help stop genetically engineered tree plantations!
ArborGen, a U.S.-based forestry company, is attempting to extend a field test of invasive, genetically engineered (GE) eucalyptus trees in the southeastern United States, and more forests could be in danger soon.
By planting genetically engineered tree plantations and monoculture crops, companies like
ArborGen are driving the destruction of forests around the world. The genetically engineered trees are a part of a field trial that, if completed, would set a precedent for agro-forestry and monoculture tree farms across the United States.
Scientists and environmentalists in Alabama are opposing this large scale tree farm, but they need our help. Click here to sign our petition to stop this field test and keep dangerous GE trees out of our forests.
Your help is critical for several key reasons:
ArborGen's genetically altered species of eucalyptus is able to flower and invade nearby ecosystems.
ArborGen refuses to confirm the genetically engineered traits of these trees and is blocking scientists from fully evaluating the "confidential" threats they pose.
The US Department of Agriculture (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, or APHIS) has failed to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to fully address all relevant concerns regarding the eucalyptus field trials.
You can help stop genetically engineered crops from invading our forests. Sign the petition to oppose ArborGen's field trials of GE eucalyptus trees in Alabama.
Thank you for all you do to protect our forests!

Save the last surviving Beluga Whales before they become extinct!
The magnificent white beluga whales of Alaska's Cook Inlet are headed toward extinction -- unless we act swiftly. Today, there are some 300 belugas left in these increasingly industrialized waters -- a 77 percent decline from the 1,300 whales that lived in the inlet in the early 1980's.
Right now, you have a unique chance to help save the survivors. After years of foot-dragging, the National Marine Fisheries Service is finally proposing that the Cook Inlet belugas be protected as an endangered species. But in the face of industry opposition, that proposal will not become reality without an outpouring of public support. That's why we're gearing up to generate 100,000 pro-beluga comments in the next three weeks. Please click now to send an Official Citizen Comment that says "YES" to beluga protection. It's truly zero hour for this special population of belugas.
With only three weeks until the public comment period ends on June 19, we must act immediately to save these 300 surviving whales -- one of the smallest populations of marine mammals left on the planet! Their situation is so desperate that the World Conservation Union added them to its "Red List" of threatened species as "critically endangered" in April 2006.
The next category is "Extinct in the Wild." Yet industry and business groups -- backed by all three members of Alaska's congressional delegation -- are opposed to the whale's endangered species designation. That's why we're counting on you to make your voice heard on behalf of this struggling population of beluga whales that cannot live anywhere else.
Even the slow-to-act National Marine Fisheries Service admits that "no similar beluga habitat exists in Alaska or elsewhere in the United States."Please seize the moment to save the belugas while there is still time. Send in your Official Citizen Comment now and help give belugas a fighting chance

Make Auto Industry fight global warming!
Auto industry is lone opposition to groundbreaking bill
Because the icecaps are likely to melt before the federal government enacts meaningful restrictions on tailpipe emissions from cars, states like California are trying a promising new tactic to fight global warming: enact groundbreaking legislation at the state level to curb tailpipe carbon emissions.
On one side, there are 12 states, thousands of RAN supporters, and countless concerned citizens who are committed to finding a way to fight global warming -- with or without help from the White House.
But on the other side, a lone voice of opposition is pouring millions of dollars into blocking state-based tailpipe carbon limits: the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM).
By suing states that try to curb global warming and launching a massive ad campaign to convince the public that fuel economy is a bad thing, the AAM is threatening to derail the most significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions currently being enacted in the United States.
This week, we need your help to fight back. At a hearing in Sacramento tomorrow, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will decide whether to allow California's groundbreaking legislation to proceed -- a decision that will have consequences for all states seeking to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. RAN activists will be there in force, and we need your help, too.
Through Thursday, we need as many people as possible to write the president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers Dave McCurdy, and demand that the AAM stop blocking this legislation.
At the end of the day, the AAM is concerned with sales and profit margins. We need them to know that thousands upon thousands of car owners and potential car buyers want the AAM to stop sinking money into fighting regulations and start investing in real solutions to global warming. Click here to write the AAM now!

No Snowbiles in our national parks
Earlier this week, I wrote you about an urgent opportunity to help protect Yellowstone from snowmobiles.
It's not too late to help stop the Bush Administration's proposed Winter Use plan which would shatter the silent, snowy landscape of Yellowstone with earsplitting engines and clouds of
exhaust.
But we only have until next Tuesday, June 5th, to help save Yellowstone from an onslaught of snowmobiles! Click here to send your comments to the National Park Service now.
Four years ago, the number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone each day dropped from 750 to 250. The result? Cleaner air, safer habitat for wildlife, and a more peaceful experience for visitors.
Now, the Bush Administration wants to reverse this progress. Their Winter Use Plan would allow up to 720 snowmobiles per day in Yellowstone, which does not recognize the progress, keeping us at square one. Fortunately, the National Park Service must accept public comments on the plan before it makes a final decision.
Click here to tell the NPS not to let snowmobiles destroy Yellowstone.
Hurry, we only have until Tuesday, June 5th, to weigh in before the public comment period closes!
Increasing snowmobiles in the park flies in the face of the National Park Service's (NPS) own science: four separate NPS studies have proved conclusively that Yellowstone's air quality, wildlife, and visitor experience are best protected by reducing snowmobile use. Failing to protect these resources and values flies in the face of the National Park Service mission!
If the Park Service gives in to pressure from the snowmobile industry and decides to allow more snowmobiles in Yellowstone, it will mean:
Dirtier air. Emissions in the park will significantly increase.
Less peace and quiet. Noise from snowmobile engines - already a problem with just 250 snowmobiles a day - will grow significantly worse.
A precarious balance threatened. Wildlife will be more disrupted with more vehicles.
Besides, there's an easy alternative to snowmobiles. Snowcoaches, which have been used for decades, offer an environmentally-friendly way for visitors to access the park for snowshoeing, skiing, sightseeing, and other winter adventures.
Click here to send your message opposing the plan before the June 5th deadline.
With enough pressure from the American people, the National Park Service could be forced to reconsider its plans. The Park simply does not need any more noisy, destructive snowmobiles -
let's keep Yellowstone winters serene and beautiful, the way they should be.
Once you've contacted the National Park Service, please forward this message to your friends, family members and co-workers encouraging them to join you in taking action before June 5th.
Thank you again for sending your comments in to help protect Yellowstone!

Say No to Noisy Snowmobiles in our Quiet National Parks!
The Bush administration wants to triple the number of noisy, polluting snowmobiles roaring through America's oldest nationalpark. But we have a narrow window of opportunity right now to speakout against this dangerous proposal, which ignores warnings fromPark Service experts

Four consecutive National Park Service studies have shown thatonly a complete ban on snowmobiles in Yellowstone can adequatelyprotect the park's natural values and safeguard the health ofvisitors and staff.Yet the Bush administration recently proposed increasing theaverage number of snowmobiles in Yellowstone from 250 to 720 perday.Seven former National Park Service directors have signed aletter urging Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to reject thisscheme.
The administration should instead ban snowmobiles whileexpanding the use of environmentally friendly "snowcoaches,"which are quieter, less polluting and offer breathtakingpanoramic views of the park. Please go to

"I'm not sure it's fair to say that [global warming] is a problem we must wrestle with." - Michael Griffin on NPR 5/31/07
Click here to tell President Bush to choose the future of our planet over political cronies.
The Bush administration has made a lot of blunders, but they made a whopper of one this week.
On Thursday, the president made a big show of rolling out what he claims is a plan to address global warming. At the same time, the top NASA official, Michael Griffin - a man Bush appointed himself! - said this when asked about global warming on National Public Radio:
"I'm not sure it's fair to say that it is a problem we must wrestle with."
Excuse me??
Tell President Bush to demand Griffin's resignation.
It goes without saying that the science on global warming is now clear. Rising sea levels, intensifying storms, increasing risk of forest fires - these are the results of global warming. And global warming is being compounded by human actions.
The consensus of scientists, including NASA scientists, is clear. It is inexcusable that the most important research agency on global warming is headed by someone who denies the science!
Now, after six years of remarkable inertia, President Bush says he's had a revelation: global warming really is a problem. Then just as quickly, his NASA appointee says he's not so sure.
Which is it going to be, Mr. President?
Michael Griffin's statements are unbelievable. Not only did he question whether global warming is a long term concern, he actually suggested that it might be beneficial!
At a time when more Americans than ever are looking for strong leadership to help curb global warming, such rhetoric is ignorant, dangerous, and has no place in NASA leadership.
President Bush should be embarrassed. He should take action, to show which side he's on.
What planet is President Bush on? Tell him to choose, by demanding Griffin's resignation.
Together, we can turn this snafu into an opportunity. Congress is hard at work on critical clean energy legislation to increase fuel efficiency and renewable energy. The more pressure Bush feels now, the more likely he'll be to sign those bills when they get to his desk!
Thank you for your action.

NO LIQUID COAL!!!!!!
Liquid coal will NOT move America toward a clean energy future.
Better, cleaner options exist: efficiency, smart growth and renewable fuels.
Urge Congress to say NO to liquid coal!
Have you heard about liquid coal? It's a transportation fuel made from coal that is expensive, inefficient, dirty, and releases large quantities of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into our air.
Despite these drawbacks, however, Congress is getting ready to throw huge subsidies at the liquid coal industry instead of investing those taxpayer dollars in efficient, renewable energy that will help solve global warming and decrease our dependence on oil. Help us tell Congress that liquid coal is the wrong way to go!
Click here to urge your members of Congress to oppose liquid coal fuels!
The considerable economic, social and environmental drawbacks of coal-derived liquid fuel rule it out as a sound option to help move America beyond oil. Relying on liquid coal as an alternative to oil could nearly double global warming pollution per gallon of transportation fuels!
For example, using coal-based transportation fuel in a Honda Civic would mean doubling the CO2 emissions, which would be equivalent to operating a Hummer H3 run on conventional gasoline.*
Moreover, large-scale use of liquid coal would exacerbate the devastating effects of coal mining felt by communities and ecosystems stretching from Appalachia to the Rocky Mountains, including polluted air and water, devastated landscapes and a dismal record of worker safety.
There are better, cleaner, quicker, and cheaper ways to reduce our oil use - it's time for Congress to put us on a path to a clean and secure energy future.

Comeback of the American Symbol - The Bald Eagle!!!!
For the first time in a generation, we have a historic opportunity to celebrate the full recovery of our national symbol, the American bald eagle.
The Bush administration is under court order to declare the bald eagle recovered and to remove it from the Endangered Species List by the end of this month - just in time for the July 4th
holiday.
The bald eagle's recovery is a triumph and an environmental success story of the first order. To honor this historic achievement, our Founding Trustee Art Cooley recorded a few words of thanks and offers his perspective on this remarkable victory.
We invite you to watch Art Cooley's statement.
We want to join Art in offering our thanks to our wonderful donors and online supporters. You make everything we do possible.
This victory will inspire our efforts to protect the other 1200 species on the Endangered Species List and in our campaigns to fight global warming, safeguard our oceans, protect human health and stand up for the environmental rights of all people.
Thank you

Stop the Prarie Dog Massacre in the Plains!!!!
Dog-Gone Prairie?Prairie dogs play an important role in the American plains. Several creatures depend on these burrowing animals for their livelihood -- including the endangered black-footed ferret.
Tell the Forest Service to stop the prairie dog massacre -- before it starts.
Please forward this message on to friends and family who care about wildlife.Dear Jeff,Prairie dogs are an important part of ecosystems on the American Plains. So why is the U.S. government trying to use your tax dollars to kill them?Tell the Forest Service to stop the prairie dog massacre, before it starts.
Last fall, more than 35,000 activists like you sent comments asking the Forest Service to stop the massacre of tens of thousands of prairie dogs on our National Grasslands.Prairie dogs provide food for eagles, hawks, badgers, swift fox, endangered black-footed ferrets and other Great Plains predators. Prairie dog burrows provide shelter for burrowing owls, salamanders, black-footed ferrets and many other creatures. But the Forest Service wants to use your tax dollars to poison and kill tens of thousands of these furry critters and destroy the vital habitat prairie dogs create in our National Grasslands.
Take action now -- write the Forest Service and urge them to stop the prairie dog massacre.
Tens of thousands of prairie dogs could be poisoned and killed -- but it’s not only these tunneling critters that stand to suffer. Because so many other creatures depend on prairie dogs for survival -- from burrowing owls to badgers, swift foxes to snakes -- the entire grassland ecosystem is at risk.
Help stop the Forest Service plan to poison and kill tens of thousands of prairie dogs. Help protect the balance of life on the American Plains.
After a similar rule change in 2005 allowed poisoning in National Grassland areas bordering private land, more than 70,000 prairie dogs were killed. Poisoning now occurs each year in these areas near private land, killing thousands of prairie dogs annually.
Now, the Forest Service is proposing to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs anywhere on three public grasslands. They’re even targeting an area in South Dakota’s Buffalo Gap National Grassland called Conata Basin -- key habitat for the recently reintroduced swift fox and our nation’s most important recovery area for the endangered black-footed ferret.Don’t let this dangerous proposal see the light of day -- write the Forest Service now!Thank you for all you do to protect our wildlife and wild places.

Help Save Peru's last Mahogany Forests!!!!
In a major advance in our campaign to halt Peru's export of endangered mahogany, Congress and the Bush administration have agreed to include key protections against illegal logging in the U.S.-Peru trade agreement. Each year, loggers cut down thousands of majestic mahogany trees, laying waste to the lush habitat of the squirrel monkey and threatening the survival of indigenous peoples. More than 80 percent of this tropical timber -- much of it illegally harvested -- is bound for the United States. Congressional negotiators also insisted on measures that would prevent illegal mahogany from passing through U.S. Customs. Now, we must keep the pressure on the Peruvian government to ensure that all export mahogany is logged legally and sustainably.» Tell the Peruvian government to do its part to curtail illegal mahogany exports.

Save Wyoming's Wolves!!!
Woe for Wyoming Wolves
The Bush/Cheney Administration is bending over backwards to let states in the Northern Rockies kill as many wolves as possible. Late last month, federal officials approved a wolf management plan for Wyoming strikingly similar to those they had earlier rejected. The plan gives wolves few new protections and allows them to be shot on sight if they wander outside the protected areas of Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and surrounding wilderness areas. In a related development, federal officials are also working to give the state leeway to kill more wolves -- even while they remain protected under federal law. The proposed federal rule change would allow Wyoming to kill wolves if they cause harm to wildlife -- despite the fact that wolves are wildlife.Federal officials plan another round of public comments on both matters this summer. We’ll be sure to let you know how you can get involved.

Tell the Bush Administration to get tough on Global Warming!!!!! 12 states want to join us!
12 States Want to Fight Global Warming
But will the Bush Administration's EPA STOP them?
Tell the EPA to give them the green light!
Right now, twelve states are ready to fight global warming by adopting tough vehicle emissions standards. Unfortunately, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is standing in their way!
The Bush Administration's EPA is requiring the states to obtain special Clean Air Act "waivers" before they can put these tougher emissions standards in action.
Tough emissions standards for vehicles? That makes sense. But the Environmental Protection Agency blocking states' efforts to fight global warming? That makes no sense at all!
Please join me in telling the EPA to let states cut emissions from cars and SUVs without further delays. Click here to send your message now.
Hurry - we only have until THIS FRIDAY, June 15th to speak out about this issue!
In 2004, California created the Clean Cars Program, a set of vehicle emissions standards that's even tougher than federal standards. Since then, eleven more states have decided they want better emissions standards, too.
But the Bush Administration won't let them implement the Clean Cars Program without special permission - a "waiver" under the Clean Air Act.
Even worse, The Bush Administration's EPA has already been sitting on these states' waiver applications for over a year and a half. By dragging its feet, the EPA is preventing states from taking a critical step toward reducing global warming pollution.
Click here to tell the EPA to stop blocking change before THIS FRIDAY, June 15th.
Once you've sent your comments in, please forward this message to your friends and family and ask them to join you in asking the EPA to give states the green light to fight global warming BEFORE Friday.
Thanks for helping me convince the EPA to protect our environment.
Sincerely,
Julie WatermanSaveOurEnvironment.org
