Say No To New Coal!!!
Last week, a coalition of private equity firms offered to buy out Texas power company TXU. In their proposal, the group said they would agree to stop seeking permits for 8 of the 11 proposed coal power plants. We have coal on the run. Eight down, three to go.
If you want the scoop on the constantly evolving situation with TXU, check out our recent blog post:
http://understory.ran.org/2007/03/05/the-gritty-nitty/
By committing to withdraw 8 of the 11 permit applications, TXU's would-be purchasers led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company (KKR) and Texas Pacific Group are taking a step in the right direction.
But we believe that it's time to draw a line in the sand and challenge the banks that are supporting the 150 coal power plants currently being proposed in the U.S. to make a "no new coal" commitment.
The atmosphere simply can't afford the greenhouse gas emissions associated with coal combustion, and society (including the banks) must make a transition now to prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy such as wind and solar. KKR and Texas Pacific's coalition includes Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Citi. Each of these banks is in communication with RAN, except for Lehman Brothers.
We need to bring Lehman Brothers to the table and pressure them to commit to a policy of "No New Coal."
You can help our efforts on these issues in two different ways.

We have coal on the run. We have the attention of the banks that fund projects like TXU. Let's turn up the heat! April 13th will be RAN's opportunity to send a message to power companies, financial institutions, politicians, American citizens and the rest of the world, that fossil fuels like coal and oil are no longer acceptable forms of energy.
Host your own event or join an existing one. Either way, you can help make an impact. http://www.stepitup2007.org
