Help save Wyoming's wildlife from an invasion of gas rigs

The Bush administration wants to drill more than 7,800 new gaswells in Wyoming's Upper Green River Valley, an irreplaceablewinter range for 100,000 mule deer, pronghorn, moose and elk.NRDC activists sent thousands of messages earlier this yearprotesting a separate proposal to expand gas drilling in thisspectacular region. Now, the Bush administration is pushing along-term management plan for the Upper Green River Valley thatwould almost triple the number of oil and gas wells currently inplace, and we must respond with an even bigger outcry.

Please go to http://www.savebiogems.org/yellowstone/takeactionand tell the Bureau of Land Management to develop a managementplan for the Upper Green River Valley that safeguards theregion's extraordinary wildlife and other natural values.Nestled between the Wind River, Gros Ventre and Wyoming ranges, the 1.2 million-acre Upper Green River Valley is the largestexpanse of publicly owned winter wildlife habitat in GreaterYellowstone. Each year, pronghorn travel up to 160 miles between Grand TetonNational Park and Wyoming's Red Desert to forage on the region'ssagebrush steppes and valley bottoms laced with willow andcottonwoods.

Expanding drilling in this area would scar the landscape withroads, pipelines and transmission lines, harm crucial wildlifehabitat, and could pollute the fisheries of the Green and NewFork rivers.Go to http://www.savebiogems.org/yellowstone/takeactionand tell the Bush administration to protect the outstanding wildranges of the Upper Green River Valley from gas drilling.Thank you for speaking out to protect our western wildlifehabitats.

Help save penguins today - donate!!!!! to the Defenders of Wildlife

Antarctic penguins are disappearing rapidly as global warming destroys their habitat -- penguin numbers have dropped by as much as 80% in some areas. Yet some in Congress still refuse to support common-sense global warming solutions or a clean energy policy to protect our natural treasures. Support our work to hold these lawmakers accountable…

Pop quiz: When it comes to protecting penguins and other wildlife from the harmful effects of global warming, who should Congress be listening to?

A: The American Public
B: Scientists
C: Big Oil

Most Americans would say "A" or "B". But if you're one one of the 5 out-of-touch Congressmen that Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is turning a spotlight on with our new Heads in the Sand Campaign, you're probably listening to Big Oil and its high-paid lobbyists. Despite the urgency of global warming, these Members of Congress have marched lock-step with their Big Oil benefactors as our wildlife pays the price.

Help support our work to hold these officials accountable for their inaction on one of the most important issues of our time. Your donation will help us keep our radio ads on the air, educate the public and work for meaningful solutions to global warming.

Representatives Ken Calvert (CA), John Doolittle (CA), Dean Heller (NV), Steve Pearce (NM) and Rick Renzi (AZ) have all opposed meaningful action on global warming, bent to the wishes of oil companies that want more dirty drilling and voted for billions in subsidies for Big Oil -- all the while, raking in thousands of dollars in campaign cash from oil and gas interests.

Big Oil continues to fund junk science that claims global warming isn't happening. They continue push for more harmful drilling and fight meaningful policy solutions to address global warming. And they continue to line the pockets of Congressmen like these who will toe their line on Capitol Hill.

These lawmakers are selling out our wildlife in favor of even bigger profits for Big Oil. Help us hold them accountable by supporting this campaign.

Penguin populations have decreased by nearly 80 percent in some areas, and the majority of scientists agree that rising temperatures due to climate change is the primary culprit. The North Carolina home of the world’s only remaining red wolves is threatened by rising sea levels caused by global warming. And polar bears are drowning or even resorting to cannibalism as the early effects of global warming rob them of needed habitat and they struggle to find enough to eat.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. According to scientists, climate change could doom more than a million species to extinction by 2050.

To tackle this problem, we need responsible leadership in Washington -- not the reckless rhetoric, inaction and ignorance of the head-in-the-sand politicians we’re spotlighting with this campaign.

That’s why, starting today, we’re running ads on local radio stations in each of these lawmakers Congressional Districts. That’s why we’ve launched a new website, http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=u8kdwXAIT--NhJqei31w9g.., to help urge their constituents to hold them accountable.
And that’s why we need your help today.

Please help us raise the $35,000 we need by June 30th to get this campaign off the ground and help support real solutions to protect our wildlife from the harmful effects of global warming. Donate today…

Big Oil already has a voice on Capitol Hill. Will you help Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund speak up for penguins, polar bears and other wildlife affected by global warming?

Help Save the Polar Bear and stop Global Warming!!!

On Wednesday, the House Natural Resources Committee passed H.R. 2337, legislation that would offer a crucial lifeline to polar bears, monk seals and other wildlife threatened by global warming.

The efforts of people like you were crucial in getting this bill passed out of Committee.
Now we need your help to ensure that this important bill becomes law… and we’re pulling out all the stops to address global warming and save wildlife. Here are two things you can do right now to help…

1. Take Action. Urge your Representative, Edward 'Ed' J. Markey , to support H.R. 2337, vital energy and climate change legislation. This bill would create a much-needed national strategy to help polar bears, monk seals, sea turtles and other wildlife survive and adapt to global warming’s impacts. Take action now…

2. Spread the Word.Send our free e-card to 3 friends to encourage them to take action to save wildlife, and you will be entered for a chance to win 2 tickets to see the The Police, Melissa Etheridge, Kelly Clarkson, Kanye West and more at the historic July 7th Live Earth concert to raise awareness about global warming. You can learn more about Live Earth on the concert's website.* Send your e-card now…

Why are we giving away concert tickets to one lucky winner and a guest? Because global warming is a clear and present danger to our wildlife, and Defenders of Wildlife needs to engage as many wildlife supporters as possible before Congress heads home for its July 4th recess.
Already, polar bears are drowning and starving to death in their search for food as the sea ice they need to survive melts away. Rising temperatures could also cause sea levels to rise, submerging important habitat for endangered Hawaiian monk seals.

And that’s just the beginning. Global warming threatens ducks on the Great Plains, bighorn sheep in the Southwest, sea turtles in Florida, lynx in the Northeast and many other species across America.

But with only a little effort on your part, you can help ensure that our wildlife gets the protection it needs. H.R. 2337 contains the Global Warming Wildlife Survival Act, provisions that would spur…

A national strategy to help wildlife survive and adapt to global warming’s impacts;
A cooperative long-term effort among federal, state and private landowners to implement that strategy; and

Solid scientific research to inform the strategy over time.
Each of these action items is vital to protecting our wildlife. But none of them will become a reality without your help. Please take action today to help ensure that this important legislation becomes law, and then help us spread the word by sending a free e-card to at least 3 friends encouraging them to get involved, too.Saving wildlife from the harmful effects of global warming all starts today… with you. Let’s get moving

Victory for more fuel effecient vehicles.....defeat for gas guzzlers!!!!

What a fantastic victory for our environment! And your flood ofphone calls to the Senate helped make it happen.Last night, the U.S. Senate passed an energy bill that wouldgreatly improve the fuel economy of our nation's cars for thefirst time since 1975 -- cutting America's oil dependence andglobal warming pollution in the process.

By a 65 to 27 vote, the Senate adopted a measure that wouldrequire cars, trucks and sport-utility vehicles to get 35 milesper gallon by 2020 -- compared with a paltry 25 miles per gallontoday.

It was a stunning setback for the auto companies, who foughttooth and nail against an energy bill that will drag America outof our gas guzzling past and into a more energy efficientfuture. And what a historic moment for millions of us who have worked sohard -- for so many years -- to break the automakers'stranglehold on Washington for the sake of a healthier planet.

Thousands of you exemplified that can-do spirit yesterday whenyou received my emergency alert and swamped the Senate withphone calls in opposition to the automakers' latest amendment. You spoke out for the vast majority of Americans who are sickand tired of our oil habit and the terrible price we pay for it.And that's why the Senate, after decades of doing Big Auto'sbidding, made a sudden U-turn last night. What a difference five years makes!

The last time we fought thisbattle, in 2002, the automakers barely broke a sweat. But sincethen, the American people have glimpsed an oil-dependent futureof skyrocketing gas prices, catastrophic global warming andunending wars over fossil fuels.America does not want to go there. You delivered that message tothe Senate loud and clear, and the Senate heard you.

We still have to fight this battle all over again in the Housebefore this fuel economy measure becomes law. And we'll becalling on you to make your voice heard in that chamber at thecritical moment. But you and I deserve one day to savor a victory that has beenso many decades in the making. Thank you for doing your part tomake it happen.

ENERGY BILL VICTORY 2007

‘m writing to share wonderful news. Late last night the Union of Concerned Scientists and our allies won a major victory on fuel economy! Thanks in part to your numerous emails and phone calls, the Senate voted yesterday to substantially increase the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard of America's cars and trucks for the first time in over 30 years—setting a target of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
At a press conference in the U.S. Capitol, UCS staff were invited to stand up with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Senate leaders. UCS was explicitly recognized for our work in helping to get this critical legislation passed—work that we couldn’t have done without your help and support!
The next step will be to get these strong standards passed in the House and signed intolaw. We’ll need your help so look for more alerts in the months ahead.
But fuel economy standards were only part of the Energy Bill that was passed yesterday. Unfortunately, we were less successful in another one of our main objectives—increasing our use of clean, renewable electricity from sources like the sun, energy crops, and wind. UCS and a national coalition were blocked from adding a national renewable energy standard to the Senate energy bill by a small group of senators. But Senate leadership has committed to letting the standard be introduced as an amendment. We still have a good shot for a vote at some point this year.

UCS supporters and activists like you have played a pivotal role in convincing 23 states and the District of Columbia to adopt renewable energy standards. A federal standard is still one of the most practical solutions to global warming, so we'll be turning to you once again in the coming months to voice your support for a federal renewable electricity standard—and for passing the fuel economy standard in the House. But for today, let's take time to celebrate this historic moment!

No Dirty Coal Planets - Coal is not the answer to global warming!!!

The EPA is at it again. It seems as though they are determined to pave the way for dozens of new coal-fired power plants, including some near our national parks! Apparently big coal is worried that laws protecting air quality in our national parks will get in their way. So they've convinced the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to approve a series of accounting loopholes that will hide the true impact of their pollution in these already polluted areas. EPA's new rule will bring hazier skies, greater ecological damage, and more unhealthy air to our national parks.

Take action: Enough is enough. The EPA cannot continue to bow to the wishes of big polluters at the expense of our national parks and other treasured places. This proposed rule would allow them to pump more pollution into our national parks than is legally allowed. Express your outrage at the

Tell congress to raise emission standards to 35 mpg

Late last week, the Senate passed a bill to increase fuel efficiency standards (from 25 to 35 mpg!) for the first time since 1975!
Now we need your help to make sure that the House does the same when it casts its votes on fuel efficiency in the next few weeks.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 by July 4th to double our efforts to educate the public and key members of Congress before it's too late.

Help put America's energy future on track with a secure, tax-deductible gift to our Energy Independence campaign.

Your contribution will give us the resources we need to educate Congress about the importance of clean, renewable fuels, to tell the public what's at stake, and to recruit and mobilize activists across the country - like you! - to make sure our nation's leaders hear the message loud and clear.

Americans cast off the shackles of colonialism centuries ago. Now, it is time to rid ourselves of our dependence on foreign oil and other dirty, dangerous fossil fuels.
A forward-looking Energy Bill must include strong renewable energy requirements, and fuel economy standards that make our vehicles go further on every gallon of gas (like the ones that were just passed in the Senate!)
It will cut global warming pollution, create jobs, save consumers money, and increase our energy independence.

We now have an opportunity to put America on a new course. Help us fight backwards policies like liquid coal, and promote cooler cars, clean energy, and increased fuel efficiency.
Give today. Help us raise $10,000 by Independence Day to make it Energy Independence Day.
Together, we can usher in a new energy era.

Save the Polar Bears!!!!!

HELP SAVE POLAR BEARS!!!!

While the Bush Administration refuses to clamp down on America'sbiggest global warming polluters . . .. . . there are alarming new reports of POLAR BEARS STARVING inthe Arctic and being driven to extremes of survival behaviorbecause of the rapidly changing climate.I'll share more about it below. But first, I need you to takeIMMEDIATE ACTION because new global warming bills are beingdebated in Congress -- and they could be a critical factor insaving the polar bear from extinction. In advance of key votes on a global warming bill, we must buildthe ranks of concerned Americans who are committed to savingpolar bears by making their voices heard on Capitol Hill.Go to the Tell-A-Friend page of our Polar Bear SOS website andsend out as many SOS messages as you can to your friends andfamily: http://www.polarbearsos.org/tellfriends

That way, when a tough global warming bill is nearing a vote, wecan alert millions of online activists to support it -- and winits passage into law.Right now, the need for such legislation is distressinglyapparent. The Arctic spring in Greenland is coming two weeksearlier than it did in 1996 -- a rate of climate change that faroutstrips warming trends seen elsewhere in the NorthernHemisphere. As the sea ice melts earlier and earlier each year, there havebeen more and more reports of starving polar bears being forcedto resort to heart-breaking acts of desperation.Only last summer, an adult bear -- his hip bones visible throughhis hide -- killed a polar bear cub for food in the first-evereyewitness account of polar bear infanticide.

The scientists who observed this never-before-seen behaviorlinked the killing of the cub -- and other recent reports ofpolar bear cannibalism in Alaska's Beaufort Sea -- to"nutritional stress related to a longer ice-free period."They also predicted that as the ice melt continues toaccelerate, tragic incidents like these will become morefrequent. This is the terrible and inexcusable toll that globalwarming is taking on the polar bear. And our very best hope to prevent an even bigger tragedy is tostart cutting our global warming pollution now.So while you have this message in front of you -- please rallyyour friends in support of imperiled polar bears by sending SOSmessages to as many people as you can athttp://www.polarbearsos.org/tellfriends

Thanks to you, we prevailed in court and forced the BushAdministration to propose giving the polar bear federalprotection. Then, we deluged the administration with hundreds ofthousands of Citizen Comments in support of that protection. Now, with your help, we'll be poised and ready to unleash thepower of one million online activists in support of globalwarming legislation that could be a lifeline for the polar bear.I hope you'll do your part today. Thank you.

new environmental patriotism declaration

More than 50,000 members of the Environmental Defense online community signed the New Patriotism Declaration – and we're making sure Congress knows it.

Tomorrow, we will run a full-page ad in Roll Call, a newspaper widely regarded as the most-read source of Congressional news and information in Washington.

We thought this was an effective way to deliver a clear call to action, not only to Members of Congress and Senators, but to their staffs and political handlers as well.

View the ad highlighting our Declaration of New Patriotism.

Congress has not yet taken meaningful action to fight global warming. But, there are growing signs of progress.

Just today, Senators Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and John Warner (R-VA), the Chairman and Ranking Member of a key environmental Senate subcommittee, announced that they have begun drafting a "comprehensive bill to address global climate change."

And, on the other side of Capitol Hill, Rep. John Dingell, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said today his panel would attempt to write a global warming bill this year that would cut global warming pollution by "between 60, and perhaps as much as 80, percent by 2050."

The science tells us that we must cut global warming pollution by 80 percent by 2050 to prevent the worst consequences of global warming. Rep. Dingell's announcement is an encouraging sign that he is taking this issue seriously and that we could see Congressional action later this year.

This momentum couldn't have come at a better time, but we need to keep the pressure on until we see real action. Nothing short of overwhelming public pressure can turn the tide, and we are so grateful for your help in keeping the heat on Capitol Hill.

Thanks again for all that you do.

Sincerely,

The Environmental Defense Action Fund

POLAR BEAR TROPHY IMPORT BILL fails

UPDATE: HOUSE FAILS TO PASS AMENDMENT TO HALT POLAR BEAR TROPHY
IMPORTS

Dear Jeff,

I am sorry to report that the Inslee-LoBiondo amendment failed
in the House of Representatives by a vote of 188-242 late
yesterday. This amendment sought to halt funding for one year
for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to issue permits for the
importation of sport-hunted polar bear trophies. Too many
lawmakers caved in to the NRA and Safari Club International, and
that provided the margin of defeat.

Click here to see how your Representative,
Ed Markey, voted:
https://community.hsus.org/ct/i1amCus1RXhl/

If the vote was "AYE" please make a short polite phone call to
(202) 225-2836 to say thanks. If the vote was "NO,"
let Representative Markey know you are
disappointed.

Thank you for your efforts to protect polar bears from trophy
hunting. We have had some victories and some setbacks on this
issue. Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a
funding cut for polar bear trophy imports. We will continue to
press forward to include this funding cut in the final Interior
Appropriations bill, and to pass the Polar Bear Protection Act,
which will permanently ban polar bear trophy imports.
Click here to urge your members of Congress to co-sponsor this
important animal protection legislation:
https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_polar_bear_trophy2/5u68w8rqemx8nw?

Thank you again for taking action to protect these magnificent
animals, and for all you do for animals.

STOP HIGH GAS PRICES! !!!!!

- This week AAA published that the average price for a gallon of mid-grade gasoline in Massachusetts was $3.17.

Unbelievable! And we all know that these prices aren't going to come down either.

It's time that we improve fuel economy standards>>

If we reduce the demand for gasoline, by improving the fuel economy of cars and SUVs in this country, we can begin to hold gasoline prices steady.

The thing is, Congress hasn't increased fuel economy standards since 1975. So now more than 25 years later the average American family will spend more than $3,200 this year on gas.

A meager improvement for fuel economy to 35 miles per gallon would save an average family more than $500 this year.

Raising fuel economy standards will do more than just help with summer gas prices. If we reduce the amount of gasoline Americans use, we will helping to fight global warming. We will also be reducing our dependence on oil from foreign countries.

Unfortunately, because fuel economy standards have not kept pace with technological innovation, automakers lack the incentive to apply their new technologies to increasing fuel economy. Technologies continue to enter the new light vehicle fleet and are being used, for example, to increase light vehicle acceleration performance, while fuel economy is not being increased. As a result, light trucks today get fewer miles from a gallon of gasoline per pound of vehicle weight and per engine horsepower than those made 20 years ago.

$3.17 is to much to pay for gasoline - Let's make sure that Congress gives a green light to improved fuel economy standards>>

Thank you for making a difference!

Save Tasmania's Forests!!!!

The price of paper: Tasmania's forests?

Talk about adding insult to injury. Top Japanese paper company Nippon is not only driving the destruction of Tasmania's ancient forests by buying old growth wood from logging giant Gunns Limited -- they're also misinforming the public about it.

By telling customers that all Tasmanian old growth forests are already protected (which is NOT true), Nippon -- by far Gunns' biggest buyer -- is avoiding the public outcry that might force them to stop buying old growth trees from Gunns.

This week is Nippon's annual meeting: let's send a strong message to them that it is time to stop supporting the destruction of Tasmania's ancient forests!

Earlier this month, I joined other RAN staff in Tokyo, Japan, to raise awareness about the plight of Tasmania's forests and to put pressure on the Japanese paper companies that are supporting the destruction through their massive purchases from Gunns.

While some companies are making progress, Nippon Paper has done nothing. My trip to Japan was just the most recent effort RAN has made to try to meet with Nippon. For more than a year, the company has avoided meetings with RAN and stalled any real reforms. Moreover, Nippon has inaccurately told its customers that all old growth forests are already protected in Tasmania and that Gunns' logging meets FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) standards.

This week, we're trying to set the story straight, but we need your help. RAN is releasing a new report that exposes the connection between the Japanese paper industry and Tasmanian forest destruction.

But information is not enough if it is not accompanied by action. We need your help to put public pressure on Nippon to stop buying old growth wood from Gunns. Nippon is Gunns' top customer -- so if our campaign motivates them to stop buying old growth, it will be a huge step toward protecting these forests.

Please take action by clicking here.

Thank you for all your support to help save Tasmania's majestic forests.

Tell Toyota to get with the flow and make alternative energy cars available soon!

keep the momentum rolling!
The good news: Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, has just announced the launch of their 10 million dollar plug-in hybrid electric vehicle initiative (RechargeIT), and unveiled the largest solar charging station in the country.
Plug-ins are twice as efficient as conventional hybrids and they dramatically reduce vehicle emissions. Google's support of plug-in technology is a quantum leap forward in the movement to demonstrate that plug-in cars are viable, marketable alternatives to the gas-guzzling cars and trucks currently clogging our roads.
The bad news: Due to the foot-dragging of automakers like Toyota, it's almost impossible for anyone who doesn't work at Google to drive a plug-in vehicle. Automakers have refused to add a plug to their hybrid cars. This means that right now, if you want a plug-in car, you can't just buy one. You have to buy a regular hybrid and THEN go through the expensive process of having another company convert your hybrid to a plug-in.
This foot-dragging is especially outrageous because Toyota -- supposedly an environmental leader -- has done the least of all the automakers to move toward the large-scale manufacture of plug-in hybrids.
So what's the next step? It's high time for automakers to hurry up and meet Google in the 21st century by building plug-in hybrids, the best existing solution to gas-powered vehicles. We're asking RAN activists like you to get Toyota to follow Google's lead.
Let's get as many people as possible to let Toyota know that the public demands the option to purchase plug-in hybrid vehicles. Click here to send your letter to Jim Press, President of Toyota North America.
For the health of our planet!
