NO NEW COAL!!!!

NO NEW COAL

HELP SAVE THE POLAR BEARS!

Global warming is pushing polar bears to the brink of extinction. If we don’t do something right now, they could disappear forever.

Please help save America’s polar bears! Urge the U.S. government to protect them under the federal Endangered Species Act.

For more than 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has prevented the extinction of animals like bald eagles, grizzly bears, and manatees. Now our polar bears need the Act’s protection, and it’s up to us to ensure that they get it.

Already, more than 61,000 Defenders supporters have sent messages urging the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect polar bears under the Endangered Species Act. But an industry front group has launched a last-minute campaign opposing efforts to protect polar bears, and we need your help to beat them!

We only have until this Monday (April 9th) to make our case for Endangered Species Act protections for polar bears. Please send your message right now and urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to give polar bears the protection they need.

Tomorrow, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an authoritative U.N. network of 2,000 scientists and more than 100 governments, is expected to release its widely anticipated report detailing the effects of global warming.

It’s not a pretty picture: rising temperatures are melting sea ice. Without sea ice, polar bears must resort to more and more desperate means as they struggle to survive.

Some have drowned. Others have starved to death. And some have even resorted to cannibalism -- a behavior unseen among America’s polar bears until recently.

Birth and survival rates have plummeted in the last 15 years, and bears are moving inland where they are more likely to come in conflict with humans.

Unless we take action now to save them, polar bears may only exist in zoos by the end of the century. Please send your message right now.

HAPPY 50th B-Day DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!

A Big Birthday Thank You
Date:Wednesday, April 25, 2007 1:45:22 PM

Sixty years ago today, Defenders of Wildlife was founded on the principle that our wildlife is worth protecting.

Since then, we’ve helped ensure passage of the Endangered Species Act, won the fight to return wolves to Yellowstone National Park and protect countless wild places and the wildlife that lives there.

To commemorate our anniversary, we’ve put together a partial list of some of the ways you’ve helped us save wolves and other wildlife over the last six decades… and the last sixty days:

Gray Wolves
A symbol of the wild, the gray wolf is once again an icon of Yellowstone National Park. But it didn’t happen overnight. Defenders led a decades-long battle to bring wolves back to Yellowstone, which culminated with their reintroduction in 1995.
Bald Eagles
The comeback of America’s national symbol is a true endangered species success story—and one Defenders helped write. Once nearly extinct, the Endangered Species Act has restored bald eagles to their former glory. When some in Congress attempted to dismantle the Endangered Species Act, Defenders fought back, leading efforts to protect the law that protects our bald eagles and other wildlife.
Dolphins
Countless dolphins—not to mention other marine mammals—were maimed or killed by driftnets used to capture tuna before Defenders led the successful fight in the 1980s and 1990s to ban large-scale driftnets on the high seas. The result: the “dolphin safe” label on tuna cans sold by companies that no longer used driftnets.

And we’re not slowing down now. In the last sixty days alone, your support has helped advance our work to save…

Wolves in Alaska and the American Southwest threatened with cruel and baseless elimination plans. Through your actions and crucial financial support, Defenders supporters like you helped us stop anti-wolf legislation in New Mexico and block Alaska’s gruesome, illegal wolf bounty plan.
California condors poisoned by the use of lead ammunition. With your support, legislation to reduce the use of lead ammunition passed a key California committee earlier this month. Lead poisoning remains one of the largest threats to successful condor recovery.
Brown bears threatened by expanded hunting near their home in Alaska’s McNeil River State Game Sanctuary and Refuge. Tens of thousands of Defenders supporters sent messages opposing a now-defeated proposal to increase hunting near these beloved bears’ home.
Cook Inlet’s imperiled beluga whales, a species that has all but vanished and is in dire need of protection under the Endangered Species Act. In the last several weeks, nearly 26,000 Defenders supporters spoke out in support of the protections, and last week the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) reversed an earlier decision and proposed listing the imperiled Cook Inlet beluga whale as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
Diamondback terrapins in Maryland, where over-harvesting has reduced their population by 75% in the past two decades. Yesterday, Governor Martin O’Malley signed a ban on the commercial harvest of these beloved turtles into law, after Defenders supporters sent thousands of messages and placed hundreds of calls to save Maryland’s “terps.”
As Defenders celebrates our 60th birthday, I want you to know that we remain committed to protecting this and other wildlife and sincerely appreciate your contribution to our work.

Again, thank you. The letters you send to decision-makers, the donations that you make and the time you volunteer are all essential to our success in protecting the natural legacy we’ll leave to future generations.

HELP SAVE THE WOLVES OF YELLOWSTONE!

Gray wolves were once eradicated from Yellowstone National Park. With the help of supporters like you, we brought them back. Unfortunately, without your help now, the wolves could disappear again.

Help us prevent the slaughter of wolves in the Greater Yellowstone area! Donate now. Because the need is so urgent, the first $25,000 in contributions will be matched dollar-for-dollar by one of our most generous contributors!

Twelve years ago, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reintroduced 66 wolves into the wildlands of central Idaho and Yellowstone National Park. More than a thousand wolves now live in the wild, playing an important role in area ecosystems and local economies.

Yellowstone’s wolves attract more than 150,000 tourists each year -- visitors that spend an estimated $35 million annually in the area.

But now this success story is at risk of becoming a horror story. Wolf-opponents in the Bush/Cheney Administration, Idaho and Wyoming are teaming up to kill the vast majority of these wolves. Even the wolves of Yellowstone Park could be shot on sight if they leave the safety of the park.

Help us prevent a wolf massacre. Please donate now to help us protect Yellowstone’s wolves and other imperiled wildlife, and your contribution could be matched dollar-for-dollar.

As I write this, it’s pup season for wolves. In the Rocky Mountain wilderness, mother wolves are tending to their newly born young. Let’s make certain that these pups live to see adulthood. Please help us save them…

The Bush/Cheney Administration is pushing for the removal of vital protections for the region's wolves, even as officials in Idaho and Wyoming prepare plans to kill hundreds of wolves.

At a rally earlier this year at the Idaho Capitol, hundreds of wolf opponents showed up to hear Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter promise that the state would kill more than 500 wolves after delisting and say, “I’m going to bid for the first ticket to shoot a wolf.” The Idaho legislature then voted to allow permits to kill wolves for only $9.75.

To make matters worse, the aptly described Idaho Anti-Wolf Coalition has begun a new petition drive to eliminate all wolves from Idaho.

A radio interviewer described the sentiments of the group’s leader, Ron Gillett, as “something more akin to a murderous rage.” Gillett has said he doesn’t care if the wolves are shot or poisoned; he just wants them to disappear from Idaho.

Wyoming’s wolves -- including those who venture outside Yellowstone -- are also in danger. That state plans to kill as many as two-thirds of the wolves within its borders.

With your help, we can stop the massacre. Please donate now to support our efforts to educate the public and defeat these awful proposals.

The federal comment period on the Bush/Cheney Administration’s wolf delisting proposal ends May 9th. Please help us raise $25,000 before then to support our efforts to stop the proposal and our ongoing campaign to oppose the Idaho Anti-Wolf Coalition and others who would kill our wolves.

We’re counting on you!

Sincerely,

SEND EXXON MOBIL A MESSAGE ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!

For years, ExxonMobil has been undermining science and casting doubt on the facts about global warming—just like the tobacco industry tried to mislead the public about the dangers of smoking.

More than 50,000 UCS activists have taken action targeting ExxonMobil, and the company is listening. Now we need you to urge them to take the next step.

Earlier this year, the Union of Concerned Scientists released a report documenting how ExxonMobil funneled millions of dollars to climate contrarian groups and worked to delay meaningful action on global warming.

Our report received widespread media coverage, prompted Congress to hold a hearing about ExxonMobil’s actions, and has generated new pressure on the corporation. Faced with public outrage, ExxonMobil launched a campaign aimed at softening its image and recently agreed to stop funding several of the 43 climate contrarian groups highlighted in the UCS report.

Your actions targeting ExxonMobil have had an impact—but by withholding funding from just a handful of groups and continuing to support the rest, ExxonMobil is simply trying to improve its image while it continues to deceive the public and undermine legislation to reduce global warming pollution.

As the world’s most profitable energy corporation, ExxonMobil has the power and resources to go beyond slick PR and corporate spin and commit to meaningful actions that will help protect our children and the planet.

Send a letter today to ExxonMobil urging them to stop funding all global warming contrarian groups, publicize that information promptly, invest in clean energy solutions, reduce the corporation’s global warming pollution, and stop blocking federal action addressing climate change.

P.S. You can help ensure ExxonMobil hears our message loud and clear by passing this alert along to friends and family. The more letters we deliver the louder our voice

Tell the presidential candidates to get serious about Global Warming!

How can we make sure presidential candidates get the message about global warming? For a start, take them to the movies!

Robert Redford - yes, of Sundance fame - has made a special short film for The Heat Is On campaign (and you!), but we need your help in making sure the presidential candidates see it too!

It couldn't come at a better time. With Earth Day this Sunday and the 2008 Presidential race heating up, it's time to send a call for real action to the presidential primary candidates.

YOU can help. Spread some movie magic!

Click here to send a movie ticket to the candidates - and check out the movie yourself.

As Redford states in the film, "The moment is now." This election is our opportunity for real action on climate change. If left unchecked, the consequences of global warming could be scarier than any horror film ever made.

The U.S. is now the single largest source of carbon emissions that are causing global warming. But each candidate has the opportunity to back real change by:

Supporting strong national measures to cap global warming;
Investing in renewable energy development; and
Requiring higher fuel efficiency standards.
Our next President must play a leading role in addressing climate crisis and their audition starts right now! Tell the presidential candidates to take a cue from Robert Redford's film and make global warming solutions a priority.

Send the Presidential candidates their movie ticket by clicking here!

Once you have sent your movie tickets to the candidates, make sure you tell your friends!

BOYCOTT CANADA !!! STOP THE BRUTAL SEAL HUNT!

As Canada’s commercial seal hunt moves into the Northern Gulf and the Front off Newfoundland, IFAW hunt monitors have returned from Charlottetown with footage of the cruelty we witnessed firsthand.

Documenting the hunt is not easy work. It means hours of anxiously scanning the gulf region looking for sealing boats because the Department of Fisheries and Oceans won’t release specific coordinates of where hunting is taking place. It means watching hours of tape to make sure we document every violation that we captured on film.

But without this footage the world would have no idea of the kind of cruelty really taking place off the coast of Newfoundland.

Please join with us in growing the global community of activists needed to continue this effort.

We will continue to use this footage over the course of the year to show the unacceptable and unnecessary suffering inherent in this hunt, to encourage countries to ban seal products, and to work towards the ultimate end of the cruel slaughter of seal pups in Canada.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of baby seals will continue to suffer and die. Despite the tragedy that global warming has wreaked on the seals this year (which you can see here), 270,000 seals are still slated to be killed.

Many of the hunters we caught on film jumped off moving boats and ran onto the ice to strike fleeing seals, hook them, and drag them back to the boats to be skinned. Once the skins were removed the remaining parts of the seals were then tossed overboard. Any witness to this slaughter cannot justify the unacceptably cruel manner in which this hunt is conducted.

Over 70,000 of you from around the world have posted your profile on StoptheSealHunt.org and spoken out against this ongoing tragedy. But in order to reach our goal of 300,000 actions for 300,000 seals I need you to add your voice to this global community right now.

Please take a moment to express in your own words what ending this hunt means to you and then consider making a financial contribution to help IFAW promote the footage hunt monitors have risked their lives to obtain.

The Canadian seal hunt is a stain on Canada’s reputation. But until the government gains the courage to stand up to the powerful fur and fishing industries, it will continue.

Sign the petietion to Stop Building More Nukes!

Did you know that the nuclear warheads we already have will last at least another 50 years? So why does the Bush Administration want to build more?

America - and the world - does not need more nuclear weapons! Tell the 2008 presidential hopefuls to make a nuclear weapons-free world a priority for their campaigns >>

Proposed nuclear programs such as the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW) and Complex 2030 are not only unnecessary, they encourage others to acquire nuclear weapons, and move us farther from the goal of a world free from the nuclear threat.

Our next President must be a global leader in reversing the reliance on nuclear weapons and preventing their acquisition by terrorists.

Sign the petition today >> http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/205027488?z00m=9425133

Rather than new nuclear weapons or a new weapons complex, the U.S. needs a thorough review of its outdated nuclear weapons policy, and a clear strategy for engaging the international community – nuclear and non-nuclear nations alike – in global nuclear disarmament.

Even a small regional nuclear war could cause more deaths than the 62 million people who were killed during World War II. We cannot wait any longer for decisive leadership toward a nuclear-free future. Take action >> http://go.care2.com/e/R8BW/hedG/Erx6

Now is the time for 2008 presidential candidates to offer us a creative vision for reducing and ultimately eliminating nuclear weapons! Thank you for making a difference today – on behalf of our children and future generations.

Article: Oregon State Univ - "Wolves Gone, Western Ecosystems Suffer"

Oregon State University09.12.2004
Wolves gone, western ecosystems suffer

Research about wolves that began in Yellowstone National Park has been replicated in an adjacent area, and a growing body of evidence leads scientists to conclude that this historic predator may have an ecological impact far more important than realized in the American West.

A withering stand of aspen in Yellowstone National Park reflect a phenomenon that researchers from Oregon State University believe is now far more widespread - the loss of wolves in the American West leading to the decline of tree and stream ecosystems. The near extinction of the gray wolf across most of the West in the past century now appears to have removed the natural element of "fear" from these ecosystems.

It has triggered a cascade of ecological effects on everything from elk populations to beaver, birds, fish, and even stream systems - and helped lead directly to the collapsing health of aspen and some other tree species and vegetation. Two recent studies by forestry scientists from Oregon State University, published in the journals BioScience and Forest Ecology and Management, outline a role for the gray wolf that is complex and rarely understood, but helps explain many major problems facing western streams, forests and wildlife."

It would appear that the loss of a keystone predator, the gray wolf, across vast areas of the American West may have set the stage for previously unrecognized and unappreciated ecological changes in riparian and upland plant communities, and the functions they provide," the scientists concluded. The studies were authored by William Ripple, a professor, and Robert Beschta, a professor emeritus, in the OSU College of Forestry. In their research, the scientists explore a concept that has been called "the ecology of fear."

The ecological and historical significance of wolves is only partly due to the actual impact they have by preying on other animals, both large and small, the OSU researchers have found. Just as important is the fear that many larger animals have of wolves, and the resulting behavioral changes in elk and some other grazing animals."Prey species will alter their use of space and their foraging patterns according to the features of the terrain and how that affects the risk of predation," Ripple and Beschta noted in their study. "They forage or browse less intensively at high-risk sites."Some of those sites, the researchers say, are streamsides rich in aspen, cottonwood, willow and other edible vegetation. When healthy and normal, such areas naturally grow large trees and other streamside vegetation that provides the basis for supporting beaver, other wildlife, fish populations, native bird communities, and stable channel banks.

The OSU scientists, in previous work, documented that the loss of aspen and cottonwood trees in Yellowstone National Park dated almost exactly to the extermination of the last wolf packs in the park in the mid-1920s.The elk moved in, ate young trees before they could become established, and the entire riparian ecosystem began a slow demise that was only reversed recently - when wolves were re-introduced to the park.In their newest work, the researchers have found exactly the same forces at work along the Gallatin River in southwestern Montana. Coincidental with the return of wolves to that area, there has been a dramatic recovery of willow populations along streams, and other possible factors such as changing climate conditions have been ruled out as a possible cause.

A modest recovery of willows may not seem that significant. But the OSU researchers say it has set the stage for ecological "spin-offs," including an increase in plant biomass, improved streambank stability, better floodplain functioning, reduced soil erosion, and better food web support for everything from beaver to river otter, fish, birds, amphibians, and insects.

Biodiversity will increase and rising beaver populations will lead to even more changes, including sediment retention, wetland maintenance and nutrient cycling. And the story, the OSU scientists say, appears to be much larger than just Yellowstone National Park or the mountainous regions around it, as demonstrated by a broad range of research. One study suggested that the loss of wolves has allowed increases in deer populations across much of North America, which led to a browsing pressure on plants that was unprecedented. Predation effects involving wolves and elk were also found in aspen growth in Jasper National Park.

In Grand Teton National Park, the local extinction of grizzly bears and wolves caused an increase in herbivory on willow by moose, and ultimately decreased the diversity of neotropical migrant birds.

The role of fear, while emphasizing the value of wolves, is not exclusive to them, the scientists said. Even the fear of human sport hunters has a role. One study in Montana showed that elk adjusted their foraging behavior by browsing far from roads to avoid human contact and possible predation.

And research in Colorado has found that aspen was far more heavily browsed, and used year-round by elk, where sport hunting was excluded.Ultimately, however, the value of large predators needs to be reconsidered, the reports conclude.

The body of evidence has become compelling, the OSU researchers say, that predation by top carnivores, especially wolves, may be pivotal to maintaining biodiversity in some ecosystems."The ranges of large carnivores are continuing to collapse around the world," the scientists note in their report. "

In North America, the gray wolf and the grizzly bear have faced nearly complete extirpation in the lower 48 states, although populations of these carnivores have been increasing in recent years.""Growing evidence points to the importance of conserving these animals because they have cascading effects on lower trophic levels."

A similar point, they said, was made by the great naturalist Aldo Leopold in 1949, who predicted this crisis."I have lived to see state after state extirpate its wolves," Leopold wrote 55 years ago. "I have seen every edible bush and seedling browsed, first to anemic desuetude, and then to death."

Urge the Auto Alliance to Support Clean Vehicles

Urge the Auto Alliance to stop the spinning and the suing

A third of all U.S. global warming pollution comes from vehicles.

Under the Clean Air Act, states have the authority to go beyond federal vehicle pollution standards and adopt stronger standards for cleaner cars—like California's standards. So far, 10 other states have adopted California's clean car standards, and a growing number of states are considering them.

Unfortunately, rather than make the vehicles consumers want, automakers—led by their legal and lobbying group, the Auto Alliance—are trying to eliminate these clean car rules, making dubious claims about the cost and effectiveness of these standards.

However, the Union of Concerned Scientists engineers have dismantled these automaker arguments with a new vehicle design—the UCS Vanguard. This clean car model uses cost-effective, existing vehicle technologies and fuels to reduce pollution without sacrificing safety and performance—all while saving money at the pump.

Please contact the new president of the Auto Alliance, Dave McCurdy, and tell him that consumers want global warming solutions like the UCS Vanguard, not more spin and lawsuits.

Please make your letter personal by adding in your own thoughts and concerns. Every letter makes a difference, but customized letters have the greatest effect!

Say No to Cape Wind Nimby's! - They have selfish business reasons behind their non-support for Cape Wind

Carl Pope critical of anti-wind "hijackers"NIMBYs have selfish, business reasons for stopping Cape Wind

by Dick Farley / Washington CorrespondentCAPE COD TODAYWASHINGTON, DC -- February 28, 2007 -- The Executive Director of the 700,000-member Sierra Club on Tuesday criticized opponents of the Cape Wind wind power project slated for Nantucket Sound and endorsed the process by which the project is being reviewed.

Carl Pope, a 32-year veteran national environmental activist and professional was questioned about his and Sierra Club's position on the wind farm near the close of the Apollo Alliance Summit for Clean Energy and Good Jobs, held in Washington earlier this week.

Pope is a co-founder of Apollo Alliance, a coalition in which environmental organizations, trade unions, energy entrepreneurs and public policy groups are converging in an effort to solidify their message and be sure their respective efforts respect the needs and priorities of other Apollo Alliance members.

Cape Wind Associates president and CEO Jim Gordon was a featured panelist at two sessions during the three-day conference. Gordon and Cape Wind were termed the "emotional center point" of the summit by Apollo Alliance national campaign director Dan Seligman, who cited Cape Wind's support by advocacy groups and active involvement in the process by trade unionists like the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Pope, the Sierra Club Executive Director, outlined the process by which his organization has been following Cape Wind and evolving the environmental group's position on the project as the requisite state and federal studies have progressed.

Fossil fuel industry fighting renewables

Pope told Cape Cod Today, "This is a good project, and as long as it is built within the guidelines being developed by the ongoing process, we will support it."

Pope reserved his harshest criticism of organizations and individuals he intimated are fronting for interests who do not want wind energy to become a significant part of America's future energy mix.

"We have been very opposed to efforts to hijack the process and derail this project by people opposed to wind power," the Sierra Club Executive Director said. "Some of the backers of these efforts have reasons other than 'their view' to oppose a project like this coming online."

Pope was referring to major funding sources and key directors of the Alliance to Project Nantucket Sound, who have extensive holdings in established energy related industries.
Sierra Club's confidence in the Cape Wind review process echoed the attitude of Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, who the day before expressed his confidence in the review process and told Cape Cod Today that the wind farm project "has been strengthened by the process," and that the governor has been impressed by the effort of Cape Wind to answer scientific and siting questions and respond to public concerns. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments,Laura MartinCommunity Relations

Say No To New Coal!!!

Last week, a coalition of private equity firms offered to buy out Texas power company TXU. In their proposal, the group said they would agree to stop seeking permits for 8 of the 11 proposed coal power plants. We have coal on the run. Eight down, three to go.

If you want the scoop on the constantly evolving situation with TXU, check out our recent blog post:

http://understory.ran.org/2007/03/05/the-gritty-nitty/

By committing to withdraw 8 of the 11 permit applications, TXU's would-be purchasers led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company (KKR) and Texas Pacific Group are taking a step in the right direction.

But we believe that it's time to draw a line in the sand and challenge the banks that are supporting the 150 coal power plants currently being proposed in the U.S. to make a "no new coal" commitment.

The atmosphere simply can't afford the greenhouse gas emissions associated with coal combustion, and society (including the banks) must make a transition now to prioritizing energy efficiency and renewable energy such as wind and solar. KKR and Texas Pacific's coalition includes Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase and Citi. Each of these banks is in communication with RAN, except for Lehman Brothers.

We need to bring Lehman Brothers to the table and pressure them to commit to a policy of "No New Coal."

You can help our efforts on these issues in two different ways.

1. Sign our petition to demand that Lehman Brothers commit to a policy of "No New Coal."

2.
Join us on April 13th and 14th for National Days of Action, Step it Up 2007Step It Up 2007 -- a coalition of fifty-six organizations dedicated to stopping global warming and climate change, will be in the streets with over 760 events worldwide and growing.

You can be a part of it by joining our No New Coal day of action on April 13th.

Sign up below: http://www.stepitup2007.org

We have coal on the run. We have the attention of the banks that fund projects like TXU. Let's turn up the heat! April 13th will be RAN's opportunity to send a message to power companies, financial institutions, politicians, American citizens and the rest of the world, that fossil fuels like coal and oil are no longer acceptable forms of energy.

Host your own event or join an existing one. Either way, you can help make an impact. http://www.stepitup2007.org

Strong Showing For Wolves

Strong Showing for Wolves

Our efforts to keep federal protections in place for Northern Rockies wolves got a big boost last week as several public hearings took place in key Western states.

Defenders activists and other conservationists have already made a strong showing at meetings in Salt Lake City, Utah; Helena, Montana; even outnumbering wolf opponents in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Boise, Idaho.

In fact, so many Defenders activists and other wolf supporters showed up to testify in Boise that officials extended the meeting by an hour! More meetings are scheduled this week in Spokane, Washington and Pendleton, Oregon.

Defenders, along with our conservation partners, scored another small victory last week as the Fish & Wildlife Service extended the public comment period an additional 30 days to May 9th.

Thanks to your efforts, the public will have more time to weigh in on this important issue. We’ll continue to do all we can to ensure that Northern Rockies wolves are protected -- and we’ll be sure to let you know what you can do to help along the way.

Already, more than 34,000 of you have taken action to support our wolves. If you haven’t already, there's still time!

Tell the Fish & Wildlife Service to keep critical protections in place for Northern Rockies wolves. Help us generate 200,000 comments -- one of our most ambitious goals -- by the May 9th deadline!

Give up Global Warming for Lent!!!

The season of Lent is not only a Christian time of personal sacrifice, but it is now observed by many Americans as a time to "give up" something to make the world a better place.

Lent is a perfect time to give up something for the next 40 days that contributes to global warming>>

You can take action in simple ways, like replacing incandescent light bulbs in your home with compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs). CFL bulbs use only a fraction of the energy used by incandescent bulbs and significantly reduce our carbon emissions. Other suggestions:

Commit to driving your car one day less a week and choose instead to walk,

Ride your bike, or take public transportation,

During the cold winter season, turn down your thermostat by two degrees,

Buy produce that is locally grown,

Ask your church to purchase energy from a renewable energy source,

Install energy efficient appliances in your house or church with the EPA Energy Star label.

Tell us how you are going to work to curb global warming>>

Have a very nice day! Michael Lawley,

Stop Clear Cutting Northern Ontario's Wilderness!

After traveling 3,000 miles from northern Ontario , Grassy Narrows First Nation community members have reached Seattle . Their mission? To demand that logging giant Weyerhaeuser work to stop the clear-cutting in Grassy’s ancestral homeland. Click here to follow their journey.

On Monday morning, Grassy community members Warren Ashopenace, Gloria Kejick, and Maria Swain met face-to-face with top Weyerhaeuser executives. They shared stories of how the unauthorized logging on their territory has disrupted their ability to trap animals and collect medicinal herbs. They spoke of the wild berries and streams poisoned by herbicides used in logging operations. The Weyerhaeuser executives were rendered speechless as these folks spoke truth to power.

Yet, Weyerhaeuser still has not committed to help stop the logging.

That’s why Grassy Narrows and RAN are increasing the pressure on Weyerhaeuser, and we need your help.

Please call CEO Steve Rogel and demand an "exit strategy" from Grassy Narrows .

RAN and the Grassy community members remain busy in the Seattle area. Today, we’ll be at the Built Green conference in Everett , Wash. , where Weyerhaeuser subsidiary Quadrant Homes is receiving an award. Recent research conducted by RAN documents that Quadrant homes are constructed with Weyerhaeuser building materials made from wood clear-cut and taken without consent from Grassy Narrows . To expose the hypocrisy of Quadrant’s award, we’ll dress as homeless caribou and wander around tree stumps in front of the conference.

“Building American suburbs from Canadian clear-cuts is unethical,” says RAN campaigner David Sone , “and Weyerhaeuser CEO Steve Rogel should promote stronger social responsibility, beginning with an exit strategy from Grassy Narrows .”
Grassy community member Gloria Kejiack adds: “We ask that everyone who hears us be an echo to our voice: stop the clear-cutting on our territory.”

Add your voice! Call Weyerhaeuser CEO Steve Rogel and demand an exit strategy today! If you’ve already called, please tell your friends!
Thank you for all that you do,Brant, David, Jocelyn and AnnieOld Growth Campaign

Say No to New Coal!!!! Clean Coal is not the answer to a dirty problem!

Since last fall, RAN's Global Finance Campaign has been reaching out to the largest banks, asking them to not finance TXU's coal-fired power plants and other dirty coal projects in the U.S.

RAN supporters have helped gather over 21,000 petition signatures from friends and family that will help keep our banks and money out of TXU's coal plants. On February 21, RAN activists all over the nation escalated that message by going into the streets and telling TXU's bankers that financing dirty coal is unacceptable.

Now it's time to Step It Up!

On April 13th and 14th, as part of a grassroots movement, we will take our "No New Coal" demands to the doorsteps of Wall Street's richest banks. Seven banks are funding most of the new coal-fired power plants that are currently being developed in the U.S.: JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers. Join us in telling the Wall Street Seven that supporting renewable energy like solar and wind should be their primary investment and to take these new coal plants off the drawing board.

You can take the first step by downloading our "No New Coal" action kit:http://ran.org/NoNewCoal/

You'll find all the tools you need to tell the bankers and financiers to stop funding new coal power plants.

Find local bank branches, download a letter you can take to the local branch manager, send a letter to their corporate headquarters, and learn about how your group can become "Billionaires for Coal" for the day of action.

Be sure to register your action – or check out what's already planned in your community:

http://www.stepitup2007.org/

If the banks don't fund them, then the coal power plants won't be built. Together, we can convince these giant banks to Step It Up and start funding the future!

Thanks,
Japhet, Debra, Josh, Scott and Julie

PS – Last month, RAN met with Citigroup CEO Chuck Prince, and asked Citi to join the movement for No New Coal. 7,000 of you supported the message by signing the online petition – so what has Citi done? The short answer is: not enough yet, but we believe they are going to start taking some important steps on climate change

Stop the brutal, Cruel Canadian Seal Hunt! - Boycott Canadian Seafood!!!!

In just days, The Humane Society of the United States will again be on the front lines in Canada, fighting to stop the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Last year, fishermen clubbed and shot more than 350,000 seals in the North Atlantic. Almost all of them were babies, some as young as 12 days old, and reports indicate that some were skinned while alive and conscious. I ask that you stand with us today and help us stop the seal hunt forever.

Sign the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood.

Seal hunting is an off-season activity for Canada's east coast commercial fishermen. They earn a small fraction of their incomes from selling seal skins to the fur industry: only a reported $17.5 million (Canadian) annually, compared to the nearly $3 billion taken in by the Canadian fishing industry from seafood exports to the United States.

The connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt in Canada gives consumers all over the world the power to end the vicious slaughter of seals. This year, we are excited to report that the boycott is working! The Canadian fishing industry has suffered a $350 million (Canadian) decline in the value of snow crab exports to the United States. Help us keep the pressure on Canada's fishing industry by teaming up with the more than 340,000 people who have joined the boycott.

Sign the pledge today! Pass the pledge to friends.

Canada is sensitive to world opinion, and its fishing industry is vulnerable to the choices of the hundreds of thousands of people who refuse to buy Canadian seafood. Each and every person who signs the pledge will increase the pressure on Canada to end the hunt.

Ask your friends and family to sign the pledge.

When the first stage of the hunt unfolds this March in the North Atlantic, The HSUS will once again be there with our cameras to show the world the ugly truth from the ice. Stay in touch with our campaign to end the seal hunt and find up-to-the-minute news, videos, and actions you can take at

www.ProtectSeals.org.

Your involvement is critical to ending the awful abuses of the hunt. Thank you for joining us today in our fight to abolish the brutal seal hunt forever.

Sincerely,Wayne Pacelle
President & CEO
The Humane Society of the United States

P.S. During the hunt, you can get frequent updates from Rebecca Aldworth, our director of Canadian Wildlife Issues, who will be on the ice to witness and report on the slaughter. Subscribe to Seal Watch.

P.P.S. Want to do more? On April 1, thousands of advocates will gather at ProtectSeals house parties across the United States and Canada to help stop the hunt. Hosting a house party to support the Humane Society Legislative Fund is a unique way to let people know that the seal hunt is still happening and how they can help.

Find out how you can host or attend a ProtectSeals house party.

Stop the Bush Administration from Drilling in the Arctic and Ruining our Public Lands!!!

Tell your senators to stop the Bush administration's latestattempt to sell America's public lands and drill the ArcticRefugePresident Bush has delivered his 2008 budget to Congress, andhis assault on our public lands continues.

Once again he hasproposed drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge andsacrificing this crown jewel for meager oil revenues. Once again he has proposed selling off almost a million acres of publicforest and park lands to private developers to help balance thefederal budget. This renewed raid on our public lands would span 35 states andsacrifice stretches of prime wildlife habitat.

These federal lands are also treasured as vacation and hunting and fishingareas by nearby residents and faraway visitors. They are part ofAmerica's natural heritage, and should not be auctioned off tothe highest bidder.Although Congress has rejected similar previous proposals, it isclear that the administration has no intention of retreating. Soto stave off this and future administration assaults on ourpublic lands, Senator Bingaman (D-NM) has introduced anamendment to the Senate's budget resolution that would nearly prohibit the sale of federal lands and oil from the ArcticRefuge to reduce the federal deficit.

Tell Exxon to admit their guilt for the Exxon Valdez Spill and Pay their damages!

It's been 18 years since the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill and ExxonMobil still has not paid the punitive damages it owes to the victims of the spill.

The oil spill destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of Alaskan fishermen and others, and decimated wildlife.

Instead of paying what it owes, ExxonMobil has dragged more than 30,000 people through 13 years of litigation by appealing every guilty verdict it's been given since 1994! During this time 6,000 people have died waiting for compensation.

Click here now to send a fax to ExxonMobil's CEO and Board Chair and tell them to stop appealing the guilty verdicts and pay the damages they owe.

The Exxon Valdez spill didn't just maim and kill hundreds of thousands of birds, otters, seals, and whales (many of which have yet to recover). It also wiped out an entire multi-million dollar herring fishing industry upon which so many lives - and the ecosystem - depended.

Please show your support for the Alaskan communities whose way of life and livelihoods were devastated by the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Click here to send a fax demanding ExxonMobil pay the punitive damages it owes the victims of the Exxon Valdez spill. Justice delayed is justice denied.

ExxonMobil's behavior is shameful. That is why victims of the spill will gather on Saturday, March 24th in Cordova, Alaska to unveil a 7-foot tall wooden ExxonMobil Ridicule Pole. The special totem pole is a native Alaskan tradition meant to force a person of high standing to pay a debt or obligation.

You may not be able to attend the unveiling but you can join in solidarity by sending a message to ExxonMobil. Click here to send your fax now.

After you send your fax, please forward this message to your friends and family and ask them to join you in demanding justice for the victims of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill.

Your support can help close this painful chapter in the lives of thousands of Alaskans - so they can start rebuilding their communities at last. Thank you.

Support Global Warming Legislation to Protect Massachusetts

We have all heard about the risks global warming poses to polar bears, but what about the wildife right here in Massachusetts, like the Plymouth redbelly turtle, eastern puma, and American burying beetle? These species are critically endangered, and without immediate action on global warming face permanent extinction.

Support tough global warming legislation to protect wildlife in Massachusetts>>

Burning fossil fuels to power our homes is warming our planet, changing weather patterns, and causing ocean levels to rise. EPA models show that sea level rise could lead to flooding in low-lying property along US coasts. And agriculture across the country will be threatened.

Ecosystems in the Continental US are diverse, ranging from grasslands and deserts to mountain shrublands, forest, and alpine tundra. Changes in temperature and precipitation caused by climate change could affect the health of these ecosystems and threaten wildlife. Aquatic species in that are sensitive to water temperature like trout and the endangered Colorado squawfish will have difficulty adapting.

In the arctic, thawing of permafrost could reduce caribou habitat, cause landslides and erosion, clog salmon spawning rivers, and trigger the loss of millions of acres of boreal forests.

We need to make 2007 a year for meaningful legislation on global warming>> http://go.care2.com/e/R69c/ghSu/Erx6

Stop the Wolf Slaughter in Alaska - Boycott Alaska Today!

Even after Alaska voters twice voted to restrict aerial gunning of wolves and more than 42,000 registered Alaska voters endorsed a ballot measure to restrict aerial gunning of wolves, state officials are now pushing even more extreme measures to kill more wolves.Earlier this week,

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s administration announced plans to pay a $150 bounty for any wolf killed in specified management zones -- provided that the shooter turns in the dismembered legs of wolves they’ve killed as proof. Her office also left open the possibility that wolf shooters be able to use not just fixed-wing aircraft, but also helicopters, to kill wolves.

Not even notoriously anti-wolf former Governor Frank Murkowski would allow that!

We’ve launched an emergency campaign to stop this terrible expansion of Alaska’s reckless wolf killing, but we need your support to pay for these efforts. Please make an emergency contribution right now!

Alaska officials hope to kill up to 664 wolves before the aerial gunning season’s scheduled end on April 30 (more than 40 have been killed so far). Hundreds of wolves -- including pregnant mothers preparing to den -- could be gunned down and dismembered in the next five weeks unless we can stop them.

We have only a short time, but Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is working hard with our sister organization Defenders of Wildlife and local partners to prevent this state-sponsored killing spree.

Help us raise the $100,000 we need to secure by March 30th to save wolves and other wildlife.

We’ve got lots of work to do in the coming weeks -- including grassroots mobilization, lobbying and media and public outreach -- and we’re going to need your help to do it. I hope you’ll support these vital efforts.

Best Regards,
Rodger SchlickeisenPresident
Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund

Help Protect Tasmania's Ancient Forests

The campaign to protect Tasmania's ancient forests is at a tipping point, and we need your help to stop Gunns Limited's destructive pulp mill project!

Knowing that their pulp mill would never meet environmental standards and under intense pressure from RAN and our NGO allies in Australia, Gunns recently withdrew its proposed pulp mill project from Tasmania's independent assessment process (the RPDC). Gunns is now seeking to bypass all legal requirements by fast-tracking the pulp mill through the Tasmania parliament.

The unprecedented move has sparked massive protests and been decried as "cronyism and corruption" in the Australian media. If Gunns succeeds in its attempt to force the pulp mill through outside the legal process, it could get approval for the destructive project in weeks. If, however, public outrage is strong enough to defeat this shameful ploy, the Gunns pulp mill project may finally be abandoned once and for all!You can make a real difference in the battle for the future of Tasmania's forests in two important ways:

Pressure Gunns' Banker: Now is perfect time to escalate pressure on ANZ, the bank that is planning to finance the pulp mill project. With your help, we have been pressuring ANZ to develop a new forests policy that RAN had hoped would block investment in Gunns' pulp mill.
Unfortunately, we believe ANZ has bowed to industry pressure and failed to adopt meaningful environmental standards. ANZ is now asking for public comments on this policy, and RAN hopes you will take them up on their offer!

Please click here to take action!
Pressure Australia's Environmental Minister

Join the Australian Wilderness Society in pressuring Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull not to approve a pulp mill that will destroy Tasmania's forests and pollute the air and water.

Click here to visit their web site.

With your support, RAN and our allies in Australia are helping to save Tasmania's old growth forests. The coming months will be critical to winning the campaign. In addition to our continued focus on Gunns' banker (ANZ) and its pulp mill project, RAN will be releasing a report on how the old growth forests Gunns is clear-cutting in Tasmania feed the paper industry in Japan. Please stay tuned, as this will be a vital time to pressure companies in Japan to cut their ties with Gunns!

Let's work together to finally put an end to these destructive actions that Gunns is wreaking upon our beautiful Earth!

Stop the De-listing of wolves in the Northern Rockies!

Today, one of Mother Earth's most majestic animals needs your help. If we don't stop the de-listing of gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, populations could decrease 80%, making the decades-long efforts to strengthen wolf populations in vain.

Tell the Fish & Wildlife Service that you're outraged by their proposal to remove wolves in the Rockies from federal protections under the Endangered Species Act >> http://go.care2.com/e/R68o/ge0s/Erx6

De-listing of an animal can work if the states are prepared with effective programs to keep populations healthy. But these states do not have wolf-friendly programs in place. In January, Idaho Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter said that once the wolves are de-listed, his state would kill all but 100 of the wolves.

If these critical protections are eliminated, the recently recovered gray wolf population in this area will be at the mercy of state governments that are determined to resume widespread wolf killing.

We have spent a lot of time and money to reinvigorate the populations of these beautiful animals, and we can not stand by while these states decrease them but 80% once more.

The public comment period ends May 9, so we must act now! Customizing your signature with a comment will make it even more effective

Tell Congress our energy habits need to change!

Imagine a world where the United States is not dependent on foreign oil and is the leader in renewable energy technologies. This would be a much more peaceful world, and it is possible. Tell Congress our energy habits need to change>> http://go.care2.com/e/R7IE/g2c9/Erx6
We can continue the current, expensive and unsustainable energy practices and policies that have left us addicted to oil, or we can make the changes that will put us on the path to a smarter, cheaper and cleaner energy future. We have the technology today to produce 20 percent of our country's electricity from renewable energy sources by 2020.

The Udall-Platts Renewable Energy Standard (H.R. 969) would require utilities to meet this important goal. In fact, a new clean energy policy based on wind power, solar power and energy efficiency could create 1.4 million jobs by 2025. Sign the petition today!By harnessing renewable sources, we can transform sunlight into energy and capture winds to produce reliable electricity. America is the largest contributor to Global Warming pollution - something needs to change soon.

Today we have the technology and the know-how to move beyond our dependence on polluting power plants by using clean, safe and affordable renewable energy. We have the power to single-handedly make the world a more peaceful, cleaner place.

Support Smart Energy Solutions and urge Congress to adopt the Udall-Platts Renewable Energy Standard (H.R. 969)!Thank you,
